Paul Assink, CPA
Partner
Paul Assink, CPA
Paul’s roots in Whatcom County go deep as he grew up on a dairy farm north of Lynden. Farming taught him two things – how to be a hard worker and how to choose a career that isn’t susceptible to weather and the price of milk! After graduating from Seattle Pacific University in 1999 with degrees in Accounting and Computer Science, he started looking for a position with a local firm. He took a job with Marlys Bourm CPA and was there for 24 years before purchasing the practice from Marlys in January 2023 with his co-worker Jessica. He is currently very much enjoying being a business owner!
Paul is our main technical support person for QuickBooks at the firm. He also does the bulk of the payroll tax reporting for clients and much of the routine and year-end cleanup of client accounting records. On the tax side, he prepares individual, corporate, estate and partnership tax returns and advises clients on tax issues and tax planning. He is also doing most of the estate and retirement planning for clients who are reaching that phase in their lives.
Paul and his wife Sharon were married in 2004 and their daughter Emily was born in 2006. Sharon is from Canada, so Paul had to become knowledgeable in international taxation out of necessity and it has been beneficial to other clients as well. He enjoys many outdoor pursuits including hiking, backpacking and road cycling. Lately he has moved to 5 acres in the county and is enjoying getting back to some of his farming roots!
Paul and Sharon are actively involved in their church in Lynden with Paul serving as deacon and bookkeeper and both involved in music ministry. They also both love to travel and have recently re-started traveling more now that Emily is older. When not working or traveling, Paul is often found cutting and splitting firewood for himself or his parents and working on the multitude of projects on the house and acreage.

Jessica’s family lives on acreage in Alger with their golden retriever and they enjoy spending time outside as much as possible. They spend many weekends camping in the summer and traveling with and without their children whenever they are able. Jessica enjoys yoga, tennis, gardening, reading and playing games with her family. She and Mike both used to actively play soccer, but now watch their children run the field while they cheer from the sidelines. Jessica also enjoys volunteering at the school her kids attend, Edison Elementary School, and is particularly fond of spending time in the library because it is quiet and organized!
